Bimini Bay Resort Enjoys Heightened Tourism as More Vacationers Discover the Island
Date: 06.12.2008

BIMINI, Bahamas

Known to many as a premier fishing destination, Bimini is now enjoying a wider base of tourism. Just as the 2007 Labor Day holiday weekend broke records by doubling 2006 tourism numbers, Memorial Day weekend has further positioned Bimini on the map as a premier vacation spot nearly tripling the number of visitors between the dates of May 22-26, 2008, when compared to 2007 numbers.

While tourism has seen better days, Bimini Bay Resort and Marina and the island of Bimini welcomed an influx of nearly 3,000 tourists over the Memorial Day weekend. From private jet charters to mega yachts jaunting across the Atlantic Ocean, the Bimini Tourism Office reported 2,869 tourists to the island, an approximate 72 percent increase when compared to 2007 numbers.

“Seeing such an increase in tourism to our island is not only beneficial to our economy but is also refreshing that more and more people are getting to experience the beauty and culture of Bimini,” said Bimini Tourism Manager Antoinette Stuart. As more additions are made to the island like Bimini Bay Resort and Marina, we can only expect to see more money pumped into our economy and future improvements made.”

Charter companies such as Corporate Air experienced a heavy request for flights to Bimini throughout the weekend and the resort saw less open fisherman and more Mega Yachts than ever before, positioning Bimini as the playground for South Florida’s most discerning travelers. The Bimini straw market in Alice Town was packed with travelers searching for homemade Bimini Bread and other handmade crafts native to island.

Travel to the island will continue to rise as Bimini Bay Resort and the island welcome new luxury amenities like Spa Chakra, a multi-million dollar retail shopping plaza and an Italian bistro, among other amenities, providing the perfect setting for families, couples and anglers to rid themselves of the everyday stresses of life.
