Quick Facts about the Bahamas Out Islands
Following are some facts about The Out Islands of The Bahamas. We encourage you to explore this Web site for more detailed information.
The islands of The Bahamas are made up of some 700 islands and cays (pronounced keys) extending over 500 miles of the clearest water in the world.
The Out Islands include all of the islands outside of New Providence (including Nassau and Paradise Island) and Grand Bahamas island. The hundreds of islands that make up this chain are grouped into main islands including: The Abacos, Andros, Acklins/Crooked Island, Bimini, Cat Island, Eleuthera/Harbour Island, The Exumas, Long Island, Inagua, The Berry Islands, San Salvador and Mayaguana.
The Bahama Out Islands Promotion Board (BOIPB) is a group of 55 boutique hotels and resorts, representing a wide range of accommodations from fishing lodges to 4-star branded hotels on nine different islands. At this time there are no BOIPB member hotels on Inagua, The Berry Islands, San Salvador or Mayaguana.
Each Out island has diverse and distinctive geological characteristics that make each one a unique vacation destination.
The Bahamas has the world's third longest barrier reef and about 14. 5% of the world's coral can be found in these waters. The islands are made entirely of calcium carbonate, which is mainly produced or precipitated by the organisms of coral reefs. There are no rivers in The Bahamas.
