Located on Cat Island, one of the Out Islands of the Bahamas, Fernandez Bay Village is on an incredibly beautiful half-moon bay with pristine white sand beach. This is one of those places where the barefoot life enhances the laid-back atmosphere where you dine under a thatch roof, and watch the sun set over the miles of beach of the Atlantic Ocean.
Fernandez Bay is a unique bay with dramatic views from every angle. It has a mile of secluded white sand, lush vegetation with Casurina and Coconut trees, and of course, the kind of clear water only found in the Out Islands of the Bahamas. Looking out to the west you see three small keys, two rocky points at either end of the sand beach and clear water with white sand bottom as far as you can see.
Fernandez Bay Village started as a land development that turned into a hotel/resort after the 1970s recession. It is located on secluded Cat Island, which was one of the Out Islands of the Bahamas that was first inhabited by pirates. With its high hills, the ships and masts could be anchored and hidden from view, making it a perfect hiding spot. Later members of the Armbrister family were given vast tracts of land, a reward for their loyalty to the British Crown. They built cotton plantations and lavish houses, of which you can still see the ruins. The soil on Cat Island couldn't support commercial crops like cotton, and slavery finally ended on the island, but the culture of Obea (Voodoo), however lives on. This is one of the mysteries that enchant visitors.
Guests also find a variety of deserted beaches among the hilly terrain and along the North Shore and on the Exuma Sound side of Cat Island, which is about 50 miles long and only four or five miles wide. Cat Island has blue holes, caves, beaches, rocky shoreline, and lush vegetation with mahogany, lignumvite, madera, casurina and coconut trees. Just one road runs on the Exuma Sound side that connects all of the small towns on the island. This isolated island remains a secluded destination, and perfect for visitors of Fernandez Bay, who want to experience the Bahamas in a natural setting where the sleepy villages are filled with friendly residents who welcome newcomers, and offer to share the stories of its history.
