Shane Mitchell’s Out Islands feature story published in the June 2010 issue of Travel + Leisure magazine discovers what she describes as “stylish hotels and guesthouses, the best places to eat conch, an almost-forgotten dialect, and a warm welcome that’s hard to come by anywhere else.” Inspired by her father’s adventures in The Bahamas in the late 1960s, Shane traveled to The Exumas, Harbour Island, The Abacos and Cat Island, with the goal of finding the same adventure her father had when he was shipwrecked on Cat Island decades earlier, although with less spontaneity.  

In the article, Shane describes her positive experience at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, including admiring her father’s own wind-tattered yacht flag that still hangs in the restaurant; feasting on the “best backyard barbecue (Brian’s Takeout)” and visiting  Miss Patricia’s for her locally bottled hot sauce on Harbour Island; boating through The Abacos with Captain Nigel Lowe chatting about their families’ histories in the Carolinas and Bahamas; pedaling around The Abaco Club then enjoying a Goombay Smash and view from the bluff; and kicking back with Sammy T on Cat Island, enjoying a Kalik and admiring the view.

The feature story includes a section on getting to the individual islands, where to eat and shop, as well as recommendations on where to stay, including The Abaco Club at Winding Bay and Staniel Cay Yacht Club and Sammy T’s, which Shane identifies as “Great Values.”
