Located on the three-mile long northern Bahamas island of the Green Turtle Cay is an ideal place in the sun, that blends natural beauty with resort comfort.
The Green Turtle Club & Marina is one laid-back, spread-out complex on the popular Bahamas Family Island offering peace and quiet, and certainly enough seclusion.
Only reachable by boat or ferry, the resort sits on a picturesque harbor surrounded by the most stunning beaches in the Caribbean. This cay is part of the five inhabited cays forming the boomerang-shaped chain islands of the Abacos which stretches 130 miles from Walker's Cay in the north to the Hole-in-the-Wall in the south.
Green Turtle Cay holds an open invitation to luxury boaters of Florida, sun-seekers of Canada and snowbirds from the rest of the world. Due to its naturally protected waters, the cay attracts hundreds of yachtsmen who find this their favourite cruise stop. Precisely, the reason why the Abaco is widely regarded as the sailing capital of the world or the sailor's Nirvana.
The club boasts an enviable location, being centrally situated within a short golf cart commute of the historic1800's New England-style seaside village of New Plymouth town. A short 15-minute ferry ride from the eastern shores of Great Abaco Island takes guests to this final stop. The marina, boasting 40 wide, well-appointed slips, accommodating vessels up to 120 feet, is just five minutes from the exotic, real estate deal known as Coco Bay.
The hotel is also the only marina property within an easy walk, just under 10 minutes, from the breathtaking beaches on the Atlantic side of the cay. No wonder, real estate is a premium commodity around this dream location overlooking the turquoise Sea of Abaco, powdery white-sand beaches and protected canals and docks on White Sound Harbor. Where the Green Turtle Club stands is more than its weight in pure gold and real estate.
Accommodation at the club and marina varies from deluxe club rooms equipped with television, dryers, coffee makers, tropical paddle fans and air-conditioning, and extensive complimentary video library. Each room has a private patio with a perfect view of the harbor, a vista that offers nothing but a sense of tranquillity and calm especially before daybreak. Standard waterfront rooms are individually decorated with tropical décor, equipped with air-conditioning,tropical fans, pine decks for sunbathing. Built over the harbor's edge at Turtle Point, they are popular with boating enthusiasts who take advantage of the small boat dockage just outside the entrance.
Waterfront accommodation ranges from standard to superior, with villas offering different number bedrooms adjoining into suites. Villas are triplexes built over the harbour at Turtle Point which consists of two-deluxe rooms and a separate center unit comprised of beautifully-appointed, themed living and dining areas plus abundant kitchenette. Villa color schemes and tones are either marina blue or coral green inspired by the marina and corals that define the cay. Currently, two units are in the rental pool, managed and maintained by the club for the American owners. However, the hotel looks forward to acquiring more villas in surrounding areas as they become available.
The Green Turtle Club also offers supreme deluxe one-bedroom apartment consisting of a luxury bedroom, full kitchen, living room, wrap-around porch with panoramic views of White Sound. The resort likewise features supreme deluxe two bedroom suites which include a mini kitchen, deck and hammock or supreme deluxe three bedroom villas combining the luxury, comfort and style of the supreme deluxe apartment with the two bedroom supreme deluxe suites or club room.
Breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner are the highlights in this town (and this is not an exaggeration). People flock to this hotel - to eat. Food is served in the covered, screened patio overlooking the scenic harbor. Imagine having the lamp-lit harbor-view at dinner, when nothing seems to matter but the sound of waves tapping the sides of pricey yachts, the whistle of the gentle breeze blowing and the flickering lights in the near distance. Romance! On top, the restaurant offers freshly-caught seafood with renewed menu of Caribbean fusion cuisine ranging from shrimp etouffe, rum and pepper brushed grouper with mango mojo sauce, blackened swordfish, steamed Abaco fresh lobster tail or Bahamian Cracked Conch. Indulgence!
Finally, what is an evening of celebration without a night cap? The pub, open nightly, proudly introduces guests to the Tipsy Turtle. As history would have it, the bar hosted British pilots who would walk in, drink and would later leave their autographed bills at the bar for display. Ever since, the bar has been famous for the Tipsy Turtle concoction of all available rums including light and dark rums, coconut rum, banana rum, vodka, a dash of OJ and pineapple, and last splash of grenadine.
No doubt the proud owners, the Showell family, a brother and sister team owning another property called the Castle in the Sand, have full trust and confidence in one extremely charming general manager Lynn Johnson, who has worked in the Club from 1999 since her early teens. Oh by the way, Lynn is proud to say, she's a real Bahamian and never left the island to work elsewhere. Just there. Let's drink to that! Tipsy Turtle, anyone? By:Hazel Heyer
