Bimini Big Game Club Celebrates Re-Opening With Fishing Tournament, Ribbon Cutting and 75 Years of Hemingway on July 24

BIMINI, THE BAHAMAS - JULY 7, 2010 The famed Bimini Big Game Club is planning a weekend public Grand Opening sure to be the next best thing to happen in Alice Town since Junkanoo. The Club, closed for two years, is reopening as a Guy Harvey Outpost Resort and Marina, after completion of a $3,500,000 renovation that included all guest rooms, the new Bimini Big Game Bar & Grill, and the Outfitter Shop, a retail experience featuring Guy Harvey sportswear and gifts.

Founded as a dinner club in 1936 in Alice Town, the island's cultural hub, by Nassau entrepreneur and bon-vivant, Neville Stuart, the Big Game Club continues to build its legend, now as a Guy Harvey Outpost Resort & Marina. The Big Game Club is intended as the first of what is hoped will be several such Guy Harvey Outpost properties targeted at fishermen, divers and eco-tourists.

Mark Ellert, President of Guy Harvey Outpost said the 51-room resort and 75-slip marina (which can accommodate boats up to 145 linear feet) will play host to music and dancing, a 'Fun Fish' tournament and a chance to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the arrival of world celebrated author Ernest Hemingway to Bimini in 1935, with three of his descendants - John, Anne and Hillary Hemingway.

"The Big Game is On", notes Ellert, citing the tremendous public interest in the Club's reopening and the enthusiasm of the Alice Town and Bimini.

"We are accepting reservations and the phone hasn't stopped ringing," said Chris Pollock, General Manager. Guests can call 1-800-867-4764 for reservations.

For the Saturday, July 24th event, Pollock said guests can register for a 'Fun Fish Tournament' that will start at 8 am and finish at 3 pm to be followed by a weigh-in and prizes. To follow with be a ribbon-cutting ceremony with government and tourism officials and a poolside party with live music featuring popular calypso entertainer Mango Man who will be performing opening weekend.

Just over 50 miles from Miami, Bimini has long been a favorite destination for angling and diving enthusiasts. With more than 50-record-setting catches in the waters around the tiny out-island, Bimini has earned its title as Sport Fishing Capital of the World. The diversity of diving experiences makes Bimini one of the top dive destinations among recreational divers.

This island in the stream that helped feed the muse of its most famous laureate and sport fisherman, Ernest Hemingway in the 1930s, is writing the newest chapter in its colorful history. Outpost, led by artist, scientist, explorer and sportsman Dr. Guy Harvey and partners Mark Ellert, Charles Forman and Bill Shedd, has teamed with Los Angeles based financier and investor Don Hankey to rebuild the legendary club, with intent to create a sense of out-island adventure and discovery with the re-branded Bimini Big Game Club, a Guy Harvey Outpost Resort & Marina.

The concept, according to Mark Ellert, president of Guy Harvey Outpost Resorts, is to take the 51-room Bimini Big Game Club beyond that of a 'fishing lodge', evolving the club into to a destination that attracts travelers, not only because of the fishing and diving, but because of its unique marine ecosystem, natural beauty and cultural character.

"Guy travels to some pretty remote parts of the world with a conviction that our conservation of natural and cultural resources is paramount to the protection of these unique destinations," notes Big Game Club partner Bill Shedd, owner of AFTCO, one of the worlds premier fishing tackle companies, and long-time marine conservationist.  Shedd's father, Milt Shedd, was co-founder of SeaWorld and and Hubbs Marine Institute based in San Diego.

Ellert said remaining work includes completion of a full service fuel dock, fitness center/spa, expanded conference space and a Guy Harvey Theater, a venue for hosting guest lecture series and interactive sessions with Dr. Harvey and the Guy Harvey Research Institute at NOVA Southeastern Oceanographic Center.
